The Beauty of Quieting the Mind
With Rachael Ferri
Meditation is more than just sitting still for 5 minutes trying to not think of anything. There are so many forms of meditation! From the classic sitting down and chanting “Om” all the way to dynamic or dancing meditation. It is all about freeing your mind. Meditation comes in comes many forms. Being able to just clear your mind and sit still is powerful. But so is dancing around the room without a care in the world to your favorite song. It’s all about your state of mind going in. You deserve the time of self-love and the chance to destress.
You aren’t just sitting and doing “nothing.” You are reconnecting your body and mind in a very powerful way. You are allowing yourself to be fully in the present moment, letting go of the stresses of the day. You don’t need to worry about the past or the future. Just be who you are right now in this moment. Be one with your breath and just relax.
If you are new to meditation, start for a shorter amount of time. Try to sit still and just breathe for 30 seconds without looking around or checking the time. Eventually, you will be able to go for longer periods of time. One minute, then two. One day you will suddenly have to set an alarm to tell you when to stop instead of trying to meditate for longer.
Imagine a stream next to you, flowing forward. Any thoughts you have that keep you distracted during your mediation time, place them in something the floats. Maybe a flower, a paper boat, a leaf, whatever you like. Imagine yourself placing that object in the stream. Allow it to float away from you. Slowly getting smaller and smaller until you can no longer tell what the object is anymore. Just focus on your breath and keep letting distracting thoughts float down the stream.
