Monday: Root Chakra

The Root Chakra or Muladhara, is located at the base of your spine. Muladhara means base, foundation, or root place. It’s symbolized by a red lotus with four petals. At the center of the four-petaled lotus is the bija mantra lam. This mantra is often used during root chakra meditations. The center has a square with a triangle in the center. The triangle is sometimes “supported by an elephant with seven trunks, which symbloizes the stability and solidarity of the earth.” -S. Saraswati (page 527-529) The elephant is often left out today in favor for a simpler symbol.

This is the place that holds your sense of survival, stability, basic needs, safety, security, and foundation. If your root chakra is out of balance you might be feeling anxious, scattered emotionally, scared, depressed, or insecure. Your blood, feet, and legs are connected to this chakra as well.

Some essential oils that are great for balancing this chakra are ginger, clove, rosemary, rosewood, sandalwood, and cedar. Some food that also help balance this chakra are carrots, potatoes, beans, onions, and garlic. The stones or crystals connected to this chakra are fire agate, black tourmaline, bloodstone, red jasper, and smokey quartz.
